DL “Dj. DL/DMecca” Hines …Harlem born, Bronx raised, Brooklyn Scholar and now a DMV native. Started his journey when Harlem was on the raise watching DJ’s like Hollywood, Disco Dave, Donald D, GM Flash & other greats. He’s watched all the DJ’s play at the historic spot of ole’…Harlem World, The Renny (Renaissance), The Amory, Celebrity Club, Kennedy Center, Bronx River & Sound View PJ’s just to name a few. This was the spark that began the creation of his DJ quest.
DL started djing with his 1st crew “DBL (Down By Law)” in which he meet DJ. Grand Wizard Caz & MC Jazzy E better known today as DJ. JazzeMoto. Here is were he got the opportunity to perform live & on stage cutting & scratching.
Now moving on to the college yrs. where he teamed up w/ DJ. Tsunami & formed “Dynasty II DJ’s”. They did college parties at Iona, Manhattan College & E. Seton College. As a starving student, he worked part-time w/ his cousin Dj. TeaRock at Tower Records on West 4th St. who at that time (TeaRock) was the 12” records, hip-hop & pop buyer for the store. Here is where he learned the “earn the money” side of the industry.
After school he went in to the NYC club scene. The “Tunnel” & DJ. Johnny Fuego gave him the stage to show what the big man from uptown can do blazing House Music & Hip-Hop blends. From that every stage he meet his good friend & mentor Super DJ Clark Kent, who broaden his music knowledge & library of playing all genre. During Clark Kent’s touring season, DL was introduced to the “INDUSTRY” where he meet legendary DJ/Producers that gave him pointers on honing his craft…Jazzy Jeff, Scratch, Richie Rich (3rd Bass), Red Alert & Aladdin (West Coast) just to name a few. At this time Dj. DL landed club gigs & guest spots at MARS (w/ Afrika Bambaataa & Moby), Nell’s, Kilimanjaro, MK II & Red Zone. In the mist of all this he landed a job w/ 98.7 Kiss-FM’s street team DJ’s & got in tons of industry, record labels & after party gigs.
Now moving forward, after being well establish in DJin’ on the downtown circuit, It’s the “Promoter”. In ’92 DL formed “H2 Production” w/ best friend Carlos “C-Lo” Hannibal. They stormed on the party-promoting scene at Kennedy Center (Harlem) w/ their 1st of many “City Wide Workers” party. After that, they did most big spots up in Harlem and eventually moved to mid-town, Times Sq. & Downtown promoting great memorable parties.
’94 Black Reign Ent. was introduced to the world. DJ’s, Promoters, Security, Limousine Service & Catering became part of what DL & C-Lo wanted the company to offer to the industry. They collaborate promotions w/ WIDE OPEN Ent. (Dj. TeaRock & Denny Mo) for bigger venues & bus rides.
As the turn of the Millennium, DL had moved south to the D.M.V (DC, Maryland & Virginia). DC, the home of Go-Go, Live bands & new opportunity. Here is where DL has evolved to DMecca. DJin’ w / live bands such as “VYBE Band” & “Let It Flow” (www.letitflowtheband.com). Mecca has gain much respect from his peers as a all round DJ. In hooking up w/ DJ. TeaRock he was introduce www.sikmixxradio.com where he has 3 radio shows. As he grew popularity there, he was asked by an old friend (Dj Mell Starr) to join him at the sister station www.thecutcafe.com w/ his smooth neo-soul, r&b, rare groove sounds. Here he has 3 show a week as well.
Today, DMecca has traveled the plains of all genre of music. Thus calling him “Mecca…da SOUL”
